Christmas Cheerboard

Our trip today to the Winnipeg Christmas Cheerboard went very well. Too well even. The kids packed hampers very quickly and efficiently, even the jam person! We were done so early that we had  time for some charades.  Here are some pictures from the trip.

Triad Conferences

Here is your trivia question...

What do we do almost every morning in our class? (Hint there are 2 things)

Write your answer on the paper beside the bowl and make sure to include your name.

I just posted a copy of the letter that was sent home for Triads in the handouts. Just incase you didn't see it!

Tuesday 2 December 2014

We have been invited to attend the Bruce middle assembly across the field on Thursday. They are having a special presentation from the band. We will be there until 10. No permission slip is needed as we are just crossing the field.

Permission slips were sent home for our visit to the Christmas Cheerboard on Dec. 9th. We will be packing hampers for families that are in need at this time of year. Please send them back by Friday.

Friday 28 November 2014

Sorry about the delay in my posts. It has been awhile. I had some technical difficulties (okay I just could not figure out how to do somethings I wanted to do in the blog. Problem solved! We just finished up a big unit test in Math on Number concepts and I hope to get them all marked on the weekend. I think the kids did well. Hopefully they used the review I sent home as a study guide. We will be moving onto Patterning, which I find to be a bit easier for the kids. The bad news is I will make them keep visiting Number concepts all year!

Miss. Laing is now on her teaching block until the Christmas break and is teaching Language Arts, Science and Social Studies. (Yes that frees me up more to get on top of some of those students who need it!) They will be looking at Tall Tales and reading "Maniac Magee". Love that book!

Some parents have also been asking about spelling and I am working on setting this up. Overall our class has some very strong spellers so there are a few students who will not be doing spelling but instead will be part of a reading challenge involving Manitoba Authors.

Our potlatch

Today we finally had a chance to share our totem poles and masks while participating in our potlatch feast. Special thanks to all those parents for sending in food, getting gifts or helping set-up the food (Mrs. M special props go out to you). Students represented their families well with their totem poles.

I also will be starting up a spotlight feature for my blog that highlights top notch work done by students. No name will be mentioned just a picture of the work.

We will be starting spelling next week, or for a handful of students, a reading challenge which I will post information on in the future.

On the side of the blog I attached a place where you can submit your email and then anytime I post something new it will alert you so you do not have to keep checking on the blog.

Picture retakes are November 14th.

Potlatch on October 28th

We have been working hard to get ourselves ready for our potlatch. Yes it is called a POTLATCH, not a potluck. There is more information in the handouts about this. Half of the class is to bring food for the class and half is to bring 2 wrapped gifts (no more than $3 each). Here is what some people have signed up to bring... Drinks, vegetable platter, fruit platter, chill, buns and butter and cupcakes. We went through the class and there are 6 more items to be brought in. Some suggestions include perogies, meatballs, macaroni, salad etc. If there is anything else you can think of by all means let me know. Another piece of business includes the diorama projects. These were originally assigned to be completed for tomorrow (Oct. 23rd) but we have postponed them until Monday so the students can take them home on the weekend if needed.

Plaster casting masks today!

This morning we had a chance to make our masks for our potlatch. It went well and the students each had a chance to get dirty with plaster. We will be painting them next week.

Our Thankful Poems

Today we made beautiful poems about what we are thankful for. They look awesome. Take a look at some of them.

Our artist...

Today we met with our Integrated Arts artist, Dmiti Komar. He is going to be creating a mosaic with the entire school to celebrate Athlone's 50th anniversary next year. Here are some pics.

The students created sketches of their ideas for the Mosaic. Today we also had our science quiz, most got stumped on the question about the types of carbohydrates, simple and complex. Tomorrow is bus ridership. We also got started on our dioramas for the native groups. Students will have about 5 double classes to complete their diorama. They are encouraged to bring in supplies from home. We are also collecting paper towel rolls to turn into totem poles.

Monday 6 October 2014

Sorry I have been having problems with the blog and website from the division so I am changing over to a new blog. Please bare with me.
We have a math quiz October 7th on place value. Students will be tested on how the write numbers in standard, written form and expanded form.
We also have a nutrition quiz on October 8th on the food guide and reading labels.
Our first T.U.S.C is scheduled for October 7th as well. I hope to have a link to the jobs added here soon. I have also been working to make tutorial videos you can use to help your child learn at home. Most of the videos will go along with something that may have been brought home for homework.
